Komodo Dragon
Often called the “King of Lizards”, this fierce-looking reptile is the largest and heaviest living lizard on the planet. It has a wide, flat head, powerful body, strong legs, and a long muscular tail. Its skin is scaly and can be brownish yellow to green in colour. Its teeth are sharp and serrated and it has a long, forked tongue that it flicks in and out constantly. It is the Komodo dragon!
Amazingly, these large lizards were only discovered about a hundred years ago. They were named after the Komodo islands, which is the only place where they can be found in the wild. They grow to about 3m (10ft) long from snout to tail and can weigh more than 140kg (300lb). That’s massive for a lizard!
They’re not just massive they’re also extremely dangerous. Although they are not venomous, they’re extremely dangerous because their saliva is filled with deadly bacteria which can poison and kill their prey within 24 hours. They also have a strong sense of smell and great eyesight, and despite their size, they’re fast and agile too. Their sharp claws and teeth are designed to cut and tear flesh. They do not chew, they just bite off large chunks of flesh and swallow it – in fact, they can swallow a goat whole!
